Having a colsposcopy test done b/c of a irregular pap smear can it be a reason for not getting pregnate?

Pap smears take a sample of hte cervical cells and look at them under a microscope for specific abnormalities. These are not het type of abnormalities that you get from Infection or anything that might come from Intercourse (that would be white bloodcells, bacteria, sperm, etc). Squamous cells are the cells that make up the cervix; similar to the cells found in your nose and lips. They are transitional cells and prone to certain viruses. When looked at under a microscope these cells should look a certain way... but if you have certain Viruses or mutations they will appear mis-shapen. The pap result will take into account how many abnormally shaped cells were observed. Any abnormal result will indicate a need for a follow up exam, a colposcopy.

During a Colposcopy the Dr just puts a vinigary solution on the cervix that causes the abnormal cells to turn white %26amp; shines a bright light into the vagina so the Dr can see the tissues of the cervix better. IF they see anything abnormal they will take a small sample of the cells for a closer inspection. The amount of cells removed during the procedure are only slightly more than would be disrupted in normal intercourse. The Dr will then apply a topical antibacterial disinfectant to help prevent any potential infection. You won't even have to refrain from sex that night it is so minor.

HOWEVER.... if the cells are found to be serious and the Dr determines that you need to have a "CONE BIOPSY" you may experience infertility %26amp; increased risk of cervical failure resulting in premature labour/birth or miscarriage, as well as increased chance of having a C-section. This is because the inside of the cervix is mucus tissues that help the sperm travel into the uterus and when that is removed the sperm have a slightly harder time getting there alive. The mucus produced by the cervix is also what plugs the cervical opening during pregnancy to prevent anything contaminating the amniotic sac... and so if the mucus plug is insufficient and the woman is exposed to certain bacterial infections during pregnancy her amniotic sac my become attacked and rupture prematurely. PLUS, the cervix (like all reproductive organs) is prone to scar tissue and adhesion. When a cone biopsy is done, the cervix becomes restricted in how far it can expand normally as the baby develops and a woman may require bed rest and or cerclage to help support the cervix. When it comes time to deliver the baby, the scarred cervix can have trouble becoming fully dilated.

BUT to answer just your question.... NO, just having an abnormal Pap will not mean you are infertile. NO, just having a colposcopy or even a small biopsy doesn't mean you will have infertility. Yes, you can have a healthy baby born vaginally even if you have/had a STD such as HPV (the most common cause of ASCUS or "Abnormal Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance"). Yes, you can even get pregnant and have a healthy baby if you have had a Cone Biopsy - though you may require a little more patience and effort.

(hugs) It can be very stressfull to have something like this happen.... but you are probably just fine. Having an abnormal Pap result is not uncommon. It can be caused by MANY things and does not mean you may not be able ot have children. It doesn't even mean you have anything serious. Most of the time the Dr will check it out and then there won't be anything else happen.

What did doctor say? Irregular pap smear may have been misread and usually doctor will perform another smear. Also CA125 blood test is more accurate for cervical cancer. Yes, could be reason for not getting PG.
Reply:no - it can be for infections etc - anyway don't speculate - hear what the doctor has to say
