When having major surgery do they test you for HIV?

I have never been tested for HIV. I got married and I hadnt had but two partners and we used protection. I have been with my husband for 7 years and never had a symptom or thought about it. Well I was talking to my girlfriend about it b/c she just had a HIV test and I told her I hadnt had one and she said "Well you probally did when you had you rbrain surgery, because whenever they do any major surgery they test for everything!!" The day before I went in for my brain surgery they took so much blood and did so many tests it was unbelievable!!!!! So is it true? Did they run a HIV test more than likely?

When having major surgery do they test you for HIV?
Yes all these tests are done and including the test for HIV.

It is not disclosed to the patient, but if anyone is HIV positive then extra precautions are to be taken by the surgical and other paramedical team while operating. This is for their own safety.

Happy now..or want to ask more.
Reply:I do agree with NurseBunny. They can not run a HIV test without your knowledge and consent. If they do it is illegal. Western medical field is quiet particular with this issue. However, there are developing countries still do HIV test as part of pre-operative investigation.

I can not agree with Bakhan that knowing the status of HIV will help professionals to take extra precaution. It is not. When you treat or perform any invasive procedures like surgeries , as a medical professional you need to consider every patient as an potentially infected and you need to be vigilant in practising the standard precaution in a given situation.

It does`t matter that the patient is HIV positive or negative.

Hope, this helps
Reply:Probably not...you have to sign a waiver/consent to have an HIV test. They don't just run them as a routine test and they can't do it without your permission and knowledge.
