Describe a standard test for the following stubstances: a)oxygen gas, b)hydrogen gas, c)carbon dioxide gas.?

a) Light splinter of wood. Blow out flame until there is a faint glow on the end of the splinter. Plunge glowing splinter into sample gas. If oxygen, splinter flares into vigorous flame.





b) Place lighted splinter at mouth of test tube. If loud "Whoop!" then hydrogen.





c) Pour calcium hydroxide solution, Ca(OH)2, into container. Shake. If clear liquid becomes milky, then carbon dioxide.
