Is there a point to takea a 3-hour glucose test if I am 32 weeks pregnant?

I am 32 weeks pregnant now, and after my 1-hour glucose test, the doctor told me that my sugar levels are elevated and I need to take the 3 hour test. By the time i take it and get the results, I will be at least 33 weeks. I am having a planned C-section at 38 weeks. Is there a point for going through the 3-hour test then?

Yes! I had the same thing happen and had to go for the 3 hour test...they are looking to see if you are diabetic which can cause complications if left untreated. It is not a difficult test as you know, but only 3 hours out of your day to ensure the well being of both you and your baby.
Reply:yes, do you really think your doctor would send you for a 3 hour test just for the fun of it. Diabetes could cause alot of problems with you, your baby and with the delivery. If you have pregnancy onset diabetes you need to be treated for your and your babies safety. The doctor aslo needs to know so they are prepared if there is any difficulties during delivery. Take the test. Good Luck.
Reply:Yes, you really need to go through w/ the 3 hour test.

However, there are a lot of false positives on the 1 hour test so everything may come out negative in the end.
Reply:The three hour test is going to better determine if you do in fact have gestational diabetes. I was diagnosised at 28 weeks. I had to go on a high protein, low carb diet and take insulin. I had an ultrasound a week later and they determined that my baby was already measuring over two weeks larger then he should. After being on insulin and controlling my diet and sugar readings, he's stopped growing so rapidly and now is measuring only a week ahead of where I am.

Even though it is really late in your pregnancy, it is still a good idea to make sure that you do everything you can to control your sugar levels, for yourself and for your baby. It's great that you are having a C-section because the eliminates a lot of the risk involved with the baby being too large to deliver. But, there are still complications that can arrise. When you have uncontrolled GD, the baby takes the burden of producing the extra insulin that you need. This can cause the baby's sugar levels to "crash" at birth and puts a lot of stress on the babies pancreas. Usually it is perfectly treatable with a stay in the NICU for a few days and close monitoring, but who wants that for their baby if they can avoid it!

The other thing, is by managing your GD you reduce your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes later in life and reduce the baby's risk of developnig Type 1 Diabetes.

So....to sum it up, you should take the three hour, even if just for your own peace of mind. In the mean time, I would live as if I had GD, meaning watch your diet and limit your carb intake.

Good luck!
Reply:Yes! Getting your glucose levels lower and maintained at lower levels will decrease your and your infants mortality levels as well as minimize your infants stay in the NICU (which is where the baby is heading if you don't take care of your glucose levels, that or the morgue). How you respond to the 3 hour test will tell your doctor how best to manage your glucose levels and whether or not you have gestational diabetes.

And I will tell you if I were your doctor and you refused I would be unwilling to treat you without some liability waivers being signed!
