Is a Compulsory Citizenship test of local Customs and Ideals a good idea for immigrants seeking residency ?

In Australia we are soon to impliment the "Australian Residency Exam" which for us is a very simple multiple choice test, to determine an applicants knowledge and dedication to our way of life in order to gain Residency %26amp; Citizenship. I think it's a great idea, just like a "driving test" to determine their suitablity.Some of the Qustions are as simple as;

1) The colours of Australias National Flag are:

a) Green %26amp; Gold, b) Green, White %26amp; Gold c) Red, White %26amp; Blue d) Red %26amp; White ? Answer c) Red, White %26amp; Blue.

2) Aboriginals have inhabited Australian mainland for:

a) 1000 years, b) 10,000 years c), 20,000 years or d) 40,000 years ANSWER d) 40,000 years.

3) In Australia Men %26amp; Women are considered equal in all aspects of life ?

a) True, b) False, c) Not sure d) Never ? Answer a) True.

Pretty simple and a way to ward out undesirables after a six year Qualifying period.

Is a Compulsory Citizenship test of local Customs and Ideals a good idea for immigrants seeking residency ?
Yes it should be and it should be compulsory to do a test .

I believe if you want to be a citizen of a country you should learn about the country's laws, policys, history and government.
Reply:I know in the USA the test is in other languages other than English , they also have translators . Report It

2 pointless

3 good

i think the US does or did have the same thing. this kind of test is kind of importent. if people want to live in the nation then they need to become as closly assimulated in to the nation as possiable. i think Austrila is doing a good thing.
Reply:A fantastic idea! I wish the states did it!
Reply:Do any of you know what the process is in the US or anyone that has gone through the process.

You should inform yourself a little more before you add comments about something you don't know.

Yes they do ask questions like that in the US before you become a naturalized citizen.

e.g.

Who is the first president of the United States?

What year was the Declaration of Independence signed?

What is the 13th amendment?
Reply:Go Oz.

Great idea.

Might add "if you don't want to learn"....dont bother to apply.
Reply:I think that it is an excellent idea. After six years you should know the customs and history, if you wish to be a citizen.
